Tyler and Sahil met in their first year of medical school and hit it off instantly. They dated for several years and, on a weekend getaway with both of their families, Sahil proposed. Of course, Tyler said, “Yes!” and the couple began planning their wedding celebration. While Tyler and Sahil both grew up in central North Carolina, Sahil has a strong Indian heritage, which factored heavily in their wedding plans. The event, which was focused on uniting and bonding the two families, would span three days—Hindu pre-wedding rituals on Friday; a traditional American ceremony Saturday; and a traditional Hindu ceremony Sunday. And K2 Weddings was thrilled to be there every step of the way.
Friday evening began with the Roka—a Hindu wedding ritual symbolizing the promise to unite the two families. The bride and groom wore traditional Indian clothing and jewelry, as did many of the guests. The bride, bridesmaids, and female family members were adorned with intricate henna designs on their hands and feet—a tradition known as Mehndi, which is said to bring the bride good luck, beauty and joy. During the Haldi ceremony, family and friends took turns smearing turmeric paste on the couple in a symbolic gesture meant to calm pre-wedding nerves and keep the couple safe. The Friday event concluded with the Sangeet—a musical celebration with both families participating in choreographed dances. Both Tyler’s and Sahil’s families delivered outstanding dance performances. Mission accomplished!
On Saturday, Tyler and Sihal were married in an American wedding ceremony at Legacy Stables. The reception got underway with the introduction of the newly married couple. There were special dances—the couple’s first dance, the groom and his mother, the bride and her father—and members of the wedding party made toasts to the couple. Our own DJ Jason got the guests dancing with an energetic and eclectic mix of music, making sure to include something for everyone. Tyler and Sahil shared a private dance before they made their grand exit.
The traditional Hindu wedding ceremony took place Sunday, the final day of Tyler and Sahil’s three-day celebration. The Hindu wedding ceremony consists of several rituals, beginning with the Groom’s Procession. Sahil made his way to to the venue in a convertible, followed by a parade of his family members, dancing and celebrating along the way. Tyler’s family greeted them and the two groups exchanged flower garlands and blessings. Tyler and Sahil then exchanged their own flower garlands as a symbol of mutual acceptance. The guests were filled with emotion as Taylor’s father performed one of the most sacred and touching parts of the ceremony: Giving away the daughter. The sacred fire ceremony was performed followed by the Seven Steps ritual. The couple circled the fire seven times, each trip around representing a different vow. When the last round was complete, Tyler and Sahil were officially married—and it was time to celebrate!
At the elaborate reception, Tyler and Sahil sat in a place of honor, on the stage under a canopy of flowers. Family members and guests performed choreographed dances for them and encouraged them to join in. When guests weren’t dancing, they were entertained by musicians and professional dancers, including fan dancers at the venue entrance, a ballerina in a giant “snow globe,” and a group of dancers in costumes wired with lights. Sahil and Tyler joined the crowd on the dancefloor for some choreographed dances, and even managed to dance with each other a few times.
